Rather than treating ideal weight as a single rigid number, health organizations recommend maintaining weight within this span to account for skeletal density, muscle mass, and body frame variation.

Why There is No Single “Ideal Weight”

The concept of an “ideal weight” was historically developed in clinical medicine and pharmacology—most notably by Dr. B.J. Devine in 1974—not as an aesthetic target, but to accurately calculate renal clearance and medicinal dosages (such as the antibiotic Gentamicin) which distribute predominantly in lean tissue.

Frame Size Variation

Two individuals of identical height and healthy body fat can vary by 5–10 kg simply due to skeletal biacromial (shoulder) and pelvic width differences.

Muscular Conditioning

Lean muscle tissue is denser than fat tissue (1.06 g/cm³ vs 0.90 g/cm³). A conditioned athlete can comfortably exceed formula targets while remaining exceptionally healthy.

Metabolic Biomarkers

Blood pressure, lipid panels, HbA1c, and cardiorespiratory fitness correlate far more strongly with longevity than matching an arbitrary formula number.

Clinical Screening Reference & Medical Notice

Calculations provided on HOW WEIGHT are based on published statistical standards (such as WHO, CDC, and peer-reviewed metabolic equations) and are intended for educational and general screening purposes only.

They do not directly measure body fat distribution or visceral adipose tissue, nor do they replace personalized clinical diagnostic evaluation by a licensed healthcare provider. Learn more about our clinical methodology & disclaimers →
